Enriching a child’s global education with multicultural music is a great way to celebrate diversity and to foster an appreciation for cultural differences.
I’m always on the hunt for new and engaging multicultural music for kids. So, imagine my excitement when I was contacted by former Ray Charles backup singer and international performer, Birdie Mendoza, to review her wonderful new children’s CD. The music is inspired by beats from Cuba, Brazil and U.S. pop, and has an overall international flavor!
It’s called Move Like An Animal!
Birdie has created educational upbeat music that’s fun for kids and parents too! The catchy Latin rhythms and beats make the songs easy to move to. The tracks brought my kids to their feet and had them gyrating around the house belting out the lyrics.
The lighthearted tunes contain some fun animal facts, and a few important moral lessons, as well (e.g. respect for others; perseverance). As an extra bonus, there are some Spanish vocabulary words woven into the lyrics!
The CD is also available in Spanish- Muévete Como Los Animales.
From Birdie’s Web Site:
In addition to being soulful, upbeat and fun, Move Like An Animal teaches kids about animals and helps guide them through life. The song “Chimpanzees” shows us that all creatures are equal. And “I’m a Toucan” and “Running Far” explain how to overcome obstacles and pursue your passions. Find out why gerbils are doing the “Furry Belly Dance” and what the cottontail rabbit’s best defense is! And don’t miss stellar guest vocals from Mista Cookie Jar and Aaron Nigel Smith on the “Snail Cha Cha.” Other featured musicians include: stunning guitarist Omar Torrez (Tom Waits 2008 tour), kindie keyboardist Mike Schmid (Miley Cyrus tour), master drummer Chris Wabich (Sheila E, Sting recordings) and multi-national crooner Jonny Blu.
Birdie’s debut kids CD, The Wild World of Wildlife, went on to win two of the most prestigious awards in kids music: a Gold National Parenting Publications Award (NAPPA) and a Parent’s Choice Award.
Update: I’m thrilled to announce that Birdie has generously provided two copies of her new CD (one English version and one Spanish) for two lucky readers to win!
